Long-term outcomes of DSNB for cN0 penile cancer

sex No Comments »

Edoardo Pozzi, MD, San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy, talks on the findings of a retrospective analysis investigating the long-term outcomes of dynamic sentinel lymph node biopsy (DSNB) for patients with clinically impalpable (cN0) penile cancer. Data from 509 patients with cN0 penile cancer was analyzed. The study reported that the sensitivity of DSNB was 92.5% and the specificity was 100%. Positive histology following DSNB and subsequent radical lymph node groin dissection was also found to be a strong predictor of reduced cancer specific survival and recurrence-free survival. This interview took place at the virtual European Association of Urology (EAU) Virtual Meeting 2021.

Maarten Albersen, MD, PhD, University Hospitals Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, discusses some of the key presentations at ASCO GU 2023 in the field of penile cancer. Topics included the possible impact of tumor mutational burden on the use of immunotherapy for these patients, dependent on HPV status, as well as research into germline mutations and tumor infiltrating macrophages. This interview took place at the ASCO GU Cancers Symposium 2023 in San Francisco, CA.

Hielke-Martijn De Vries, MD, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, Netherlands, discusses the findings of a study presented by Lieke Wever, MD, PhD, also from the Netherlands Cancer Institute, which evaluated risk factors for complications after dynamic sentinel node biopsy in patients with penile cancer. The study concluded that dynamic sentinel node biopsy is associated with a considerable risk of complications, however 95% of these complications were grade I-II, meaning outcomes were still favourable in comparison to inguinal lymph node dissection. The number of removed lymph nodes was found to be the primary risk factor for postoperative complications. This interview took place at the virtual European Association of Urology (EAU) Virtual Meeting 2021.

Caution: This talk contains graphic images. Globally respected urologist, Dr. Rene Sotelo, approaches the difficult conversation about the prominence of penile cancer with sensitivity, professionalism and humor. He says, “We have increased the survival rate for breast and prostate cancer, but the survival rate for penile cancer has decreased. Why are people coming in late for treatment? It’s not because they don’t have access to medical services. It’s because of shame, fear, and ignorance of how severe penile cancer can be.” Dr. Sotelo hopes that by shedding light on this preventable cancer, he can reduce the stigma behind the disease and help his patients advocate for their own care and the care of their friends and family.
Dr. René Sotelo serves as a professor of urology at the Institute of Urology at USC and Medical Director of the International Services at Keck Medicine of USC. Recognized for his leadership in the field of laparoscopic and robotic repair techniques, Dr. Sotelo has performed more than 3,000 advanced laparoscopic-robotic surgeries, including complex urinary fistulae, radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, cystectomy, and inguinal lymphadenectomy. He is considered a pioneer among his peers and one of the most experienced surgeons in the world, for using these techniques to treat patients. As a distinguished researcher, Dr. Sotelo has published more than 60 articles on urology.
