Learn how to pronounce “penis” with the American Pronunciation Guide (“APG”)!
The American Pronunciation Guide is devoted to descriptive linguistics–i.e., the study of the internal phonological, grammatical, and semantic structures of languages without reference to the history of the language or comparison with other languages. We believe that the best way to learn how to say “penis” (or any other word) is to listen to the pronunciation of our peers. To help foster such descriptive learning, we provide videos combining relevant clips from popular culture. Enjoy!

Let’s understand the anatomy of the penis:
-The glans is the head or tip of the penis. The opening of the urethra is located here, which is where urine, pre-cum, and semen exit from. For many people, the glans is the most sensitive part of the penis.
-In an uncircumcised penis, the foreskin drapes over the head of the penis like a hood when not erect. When erect, the foreskin retracts and exposes the glans. In a circumcised penis, the foreskin is absent. This leaves the glans visible at all times, whether erect or not. It is estimated that approximately 30-40% of penis owners globally are circumcised, mainly for religious or cultural reasons.
-The shaft of the penis extends from the glans to where it connects to the lower belly or pubic region. The shaft houses the urethra, and is made up of layers of spongy tissue, which can fill up with blood when stimulated –this is what causes a penis to grow in size and firmness when erect. It is very common for the penis to curve slightly when erect. This is generally harmless and not a cause for concern.
-A small ridge of skin called the frenulum connects the foreskin to the penis, and the raphe is the faint line or seam along the underside of the shaft of the penis that extends across the scrotum and perineum as well.
-Below the penis, surrounded by pubic hair, are the testicles or balls. They are located together in a single sac called the scrotum, or ball sac which is like temperature regulated housing for the testes. The testes have two main functions: to produce sperm, and to produce hormones, particularly testosterone.
The head, the shaft, and even the testes can all be sources of pleasure when stimulated during sexual activity — different folks may enjoy different things— so talk about what you and your partner enjoy!✨

Caution: This talk contains graphic images. Globally respected urologist, Dr. Rene Sotelo, approaches the difficult conversation about the prominence of penile cancer with sensitivity, professionalism and humor. He says, “We have increased the survival rate for breast and prostate cancer, but the survival rate for penile cancer has decreased. Why are people coming in late for treatment? It’s not because they don’t have access to medical services. It’s because of shame, fear, and ignorance of how severe penile cancer can be.” Dr. Sotelo hopes that by shedding light on this preventable cancer, he can reduce the stigma behind the disease and help his patients advocate for their own care and the care of their friends and family.
Dr. René Sotelo serves as a professor of urology at the Institute of Urology at USC and Medical Director of the International Services at Keck Medicine of USC. Recognized for his leadership in the field of laparoscopic and robotic repair techniques, Dr. Sotelo has performed more than 3,000 advanced laparoscopic-robotic surgeries, including complex urinary fistulae, radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, cystectomy, and inguinal lymphadenectomy. He is considered a pioneer among his peers and one of the most experienced surgeons in the world, for using these techniques to treat patients. As a distinguished researcher, Dr. Sotelo has published more than 60 articles on urology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
